Dublin Port handles about two-thirds of all Ireland’s port traffic and is the country’s largest freight and passenger port. It has faced long-standing challenges in managing traffic, with a major issue arising during the delivery of new cars, when hundreds of vehicles must cross a main artery leading out of the port, causing significant congestion.
The problem has only grown with the increasing number of cruise ships now calling into Dublin. To address this, the port is expanding to include a designated cruise area which has only strengthened the need for a solution. However, the problem of existing traffic and congestion needed to be addressed.
Dublin Port needed an answer to their congestion problems. They required a rugged, portable barrier that provided an extra layer of protection for staff when ships docked with very short turnaround times. The solution had to be quick to deploy during busy periods, with minimal fuss and easy to move out of the way when not required. That’s where INSTABOOM stepped in, fully securing the access road in minutes. INSTABOOM is a mobile solar-hybrid, remote operated barrier that can be deployed by one person. Robust and durable by design it increases safety by controlling worksite access.
Initially, Dublin Port hired one INSTABOOM unit for almost a year. Because it worked so well and was thoroughly tried and tested, they then decided to purchase the hire unit, with plans to acquire one or two more to fully manage the growing flow of traffic and ensure delays to the public are kept to an absolute minimum.
Keith Halpenny, Operations Manager, Dublin Port, says: “INSTABOOM has been a lifesaver to us so much so that in our new budget I have put in a requirement to purchase a second and possibly third unit. I can’t praise it enough. One less problem to worry about”.
